Title:
Survey of geology, geologic materials, and geologic hazards in proposed access corridors in selected quadrangles, Alaska
Abstract:
As part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) effort to make final recommendations of federal land parcels to be considered for selection by the State of Alaska according to provisions of the Statehood Act, a decision was made to identify and evaluate potential access corridors. Corridor maps were compiled for a total of 78 quadrangles throughout Alaska. This map suite shows relevant geologic information at a scale of 1:250,000 for 10-mile-wide corridors straddling centerlines for proposed access routes throughout Alaska. The maps are based on geologic data compiled from existing, published mapping. Each compiled corridor geology map was used to derive maps of potential construction materials, data quality, and geologic hazards. A second geologic-hazards map shows non-derivative potential hazards compiled from published maps and reports, including faults, icings, avalanches, jokulhlaups, and permafrost.
Supplemental_Information:
This data distribution package provides shapefiles that outline the various map units displayed on the printed maps that were produced for the Transportation Corridor project. This metadata file provides a general description of the complete map collection. Files are grouped by publication and each publication directory includes a metadata file that specifically describes the files within it. The printed maps were created using ArcInfo version 7.0.4 coverage files. To facilitate cross platform use by modern GIS applications we have converted the original coverage files to shapefiles. The publication specific metadata files (and the process steps listed in this metadata file) describe the original ArcInfo export files and refer to the arc and polygon attribute tables and to the originating coverages. The shapefiles and the related publication specific metadata files have NOT been reviewed for consistency and data integrity. In the interest of facilitating access to this data we are releasing these files in their current form; however, we caution that users may need to do significant work to resolve data and documentation inconsistencies. The DGGS metadata standard extends the FGDC standard to include several elements that are required to facilitate internal data management. These elements are referred to as layers. This dataset is described as a single layer titled:

Why was the data set created?

This project and resulting maps and coverages were intended to provide data to planners during the Alaska state land selection process so that 1-mile-wide access corridors connecting strategically important centers of population, ports, pinch points, and resource-rich lands could ultimately be located to accommodate favorable terrain and avoid natural hazards and so that available materials resources could also be selected.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1991 (process 1 of 9)
Base map data and delineation of corridor centerlines and buffers, coverage names AMRQMQ (arc coverage of quadrangle outline, no attributes), AMRCOR (arc coverage of corridor centerlines, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information), AMRCORB (polygon coverage of corridor buffers, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information), and AMRCORL (annotation and leaders for corridor names, no attributes) - The quadrangle boundary was copied from an existing statewide coverage acquired from the State of Alaska Land Records Information Section (LRIS). Corridor centerlines were plotted by hand on a Mylar overlay on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000-scale topographic base map. Linework was digitized from the Mylar overlay using ArcEdit and a digitizing table. The centerline arc coverage was edited using ArcEdit, and a new polygon coverage generated of a 5-mile buffer (total width 10 miles).

    Date: 1991 (process 2 of 9)
Geologic map compilation, coverage names AMRGEO2 or AMRGEO1 (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information) and AMRGEOL (annotation and leaders for lithologic/geologic units, no attributes) - The geologic map of the 10-mile-wide strip was compiled by hand on a Mylar overlay on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000-scale topographic base map using existing geologic maps. Linework was digitized from the Mylar overlay using ArcEdit and a digitizing table. Linework was edited using ArcEdit, and polygon topology generated and unit designations (item UNIT) assigned using ArcInfo and ArcEdit. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to Adobe Illustrator for final cartographic assembly in 2002.

    Date: 1991 (process 3 of 9)
Geologic-materials map generation, coverage names AMRMAT (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information) and AMRMATL (annotation and leaders for geologic-materials units, no attributes) - Data from the compiled geologic map of the corridor was used as the basis for generating the derivative engineering-geologic map. An ArcInfo lookup table was made to assign geologic units (item UNIT) from the geologic map to appropriate construction-materials units (item MAT). This lookup table was applied to the ArcInfo polygon coverage containing the geologic units and a new geologic-materials polygon coverage was generated using the 'dissolve' command based on the new materials-unit item 'MAT'. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files of the resulting materials coverage using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to Adobe Illustrator for final cartographic assembly in 2002.

    Date: 1991 (process 4 of 9)
Data-quality map generation, coverage names AMRDQ (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information) and AMRDQL (annotation and leaders for data-quality units, no attributes) - The boundaries of the source maps used to compile the corridor geologic map were compiled on a Mylar overlay on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000-scale topographic base map. Linework was digitized from the Mylar overlay using ArcEdit and a digitizing table. Linework was edited using ArcEdit, and polygon topology generated and data quality designations (item DQCODE) assigned using ArcInfo and ArcEdit. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to Adobe Illustrator for final cartographic assembly in 2002.

    Date: 1991 (process 5 of 9)
Derivative geologic-hazards map generation, coverage names AMRHAZ (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information) and AMRHAZL (annotation and leaders for derivative geologic-hazards units, no attributes) - Data from the compiled geologic map of the corridor was used as the basis for generating the derivative geologic-hazards map. An ArcInfo lookup table was made to assign geologic units (item UNIT) from the geologic map to appropriate geologic-hazards units (item HAZ). This lookup table was applied to the ArcInfo polygon coverage containing the geologic units and a new geologic-hazards polygon coverage was generated using the 'dissolve' command based on the new hazards-unit item 'HAZ'. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files of the resulting hazards coverage using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to Adobe Illustrator for final cartographic assembly in 2002.

    Date: 1991 (process 6 of 9)
Non-derivative geologic-hazards map compilation, coverage names AMRNAD (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information), AMRSNAV (polygon coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information), AMRJOK (point coverage of jokulhlaups locations, no attributes), AMRFLT (arc coverage, described in Entity_and_Attribute_Information), and AMRFLTL (annotation and leaders for faults, no attributes) - The non-derivative geologic-hazards map of faults, avalanches, naleds (icings, or aufeis), jokulhlaups, and permafrost was compiled by hand on a Mylar overlay on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000-scale topographic base map using data derived from published sources. Linework was digitized from the Mylar overlay using ArcEdit and a digitizing table. Linework was edited using ArcEdit, and polygon topology generated and attribute designations assigned using ArcInfo and ArcEdit. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to Adobe Illustrator for final cartographic assembly in 2002.

    Date: 2002 (process 7 of 9)
Metadata for each individual map was created by D.S.P. Stevens using a text file template.

    Date: 2011 (process 8 of 9)
Arc files were converted to shapefiles. The shapefiles were spot checked to verify functionality but not extensively quality controlled.

    Date: 2012 (process 9 of 9)
We compiled the shapefiles and legacy metadata into a single data distribution package, associated the package with this report (MP 129), and wrote a generalized metadata file to describe the components of the online data-release.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Data for geologic coverages were digitized from a Mylar geologic compilation of previously published mapping. Attribute accuracy is dependent on the reliability of the originating data. References are cited on the printed maps.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Data for geologic coverages were digitized from a Mylar geologic compilation of previously published mapping. Horizontal accuracy is dependent on the reliability of the originating data.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

This dataset includes coverages that contain information about geologic units, data quality, derivative potential construction materials, derivative potential geologic hazards, and non-derivative potential geologic hazards consisting of permafrost, icings (naleds), jokulhlaups (glacial lake outburst floods), snow avalanches, and nearby faults.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

This dataset, as a whole, contains numerous logical consistency errors. We caution that users may need to do significant work to resolve data and documentation inconsistencies
