The Preliminary Interpretive Report 2004-3B, "Bedrock geologic map of the Livengood SW C-3 and SE C-4 quadrangles, Tolovana mining district, Alaska," is the bedrock geologic map of an approximately 123-square-mile area in the central Livengood Quadrangle, Alaska.
The bedrock geologic map was produced from field work in 2003 by mineral-resource personnel from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Additional mapping by DGGS personnel in 2001 was incorporated into the project. The purpose of the project is to provide 1:50,000-scale geologic mapping of the Livengood airborne geophysical survey area. The Livengood airborne geophysical surveyhelicopter-based survey included aeromagnetic and electromagnetic data which were released by DGGS in 1999. The geophysical survey and geologic mapping are part of the Alaska Airborne Geophysical/Geological Mineral Inventory Program, a special multi-year investment by the State of Alaska to expand Alaska's geologic and mineral resources knowledge base, catalyze future private-sector mineral exploration and development, and guide state planning.
The 16 layers listed below are present as shape files. For printing or viewing from a GIS environment, the layers are listed in order of topmost layer to bottommost layer. Attribute information for the 16 layers (entities) is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribution_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Data_Layer".

Location data for geologic point shape files were downloaded from Garmin 12XL GPS units into a Microsoft Access database. Field notes were manually entered into the database. Spatial data attributes were either queried directly from the database or attached to the objects using MapInfo Professional 6.5 or 7.5, and ArcGIS 8.3. Attributes were verified for consistency and completeness during the creation of the metadata. Geologic data used in the compilation are the field maps and notes from this project (2001 and 2003) as well as data from other sources as noted in the "Source_Information" section. The attributes of this geospatial data set consist of text identifiers and numeric codes that indicate the identity of the geologic unit or type of geologic feature and determine how each feature is symbolized. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the original analog or digital compilation were corrected as needed. The geologic interpretations presented in this report have undergone two technical reviews by geologists familiar with the subject of the report or geology of the map area. Reviewers' suggestions were incorporated into the final draft when deemed appropriate by the author.
Topology is present on appropriate polygon and line feature classes of the originating geodatabase; others are point feature classes.
This dataset includes feature classes that contain information about geologic units; age, fossil, and field sample locations; structural features; structural measurements; dike locations; and drill hole locations.
DGGS location data and estimated position errors were downloaded from Garmin 12XL GPS units into an Access database. Sample numbers and locations with selected data were queried from the database or brought into an Excel spreadsheet and then spatially registered and analyzed in MapInfo Professional 6.5 or 7.5. See "Source_Information" section for horizontal positional accuracy of locations not measured by DGGS.
10
A value of estimated position error in meters was calculated by the Garmin 12XL units and recorded for each sample location. Estimated position error calculated by the Garmin 12XL units was not less than 3 meters and averaged approximately 6 meters. The GPS system suffers from calculation and geometric error. This error results from items such as error in satellite positions, mathematical error introduced by the formulas used by the GPS unit for calculating position, and errors caused by narrow satellite alignments. Estimated position error is a value determined by the GPS manufacturer for the calculation and geometric error as a whole. "Selective availability," a deliberate degradation of GPS data managed by the U.S. government that induces an additional error of approximately 100 meters to a GPS location, was not in effect during DGGS's 2001 or 2003 field work.
Bedrock geologic map data have a horizontal positional accuracy dependent on the "on-screen" method of digital cartography. Map error is induced by: (1) transferring map data from base topography to a mylar compilation map, with an estimated potential error due to a pen line width of approximately 0.001 being equivalent to approximately 1.5 meters on the ground; (2) the digitizing RMS error (24 control points on a regular grid have an average RMS error of 10.8 meters on the ground; individual control point error ranges from 4.3 to 21.2 meters on the ground); and (3) the accuracy of the human operator digitizing the geologic linework from the topographic base map, with an estimated error due to a pen line width of approximately 0.001 being equivalent to approximately 1.5 meters on the ground. Total potential horizontal error for bedrock geologic map features is estimated to be approximately 10 meters.

The geophysical datasets in this publication were used throughout the Livengood mapping project. Prior to field work, the geophysical data were used to identify locations of geophysically inferred faults and potential unit boundary locations, and unusual anomalies were noted for follow-up investigation in the field. Printed copies of the geophysical data, overlain by topography, were carried by geologists in the field to help determine the geologic cause for variations in the geophysical data along their traverses. During map compilation, geophysical data were useful for extending mapped contacts through regions covered by vegetation or surficial deposits.

Field work - During the summer of 2003 DGGS conducted a geologic field mapping project to provide geologic ground truth for airborne geophysical surveys flown in the Livengood area in 1999 (DGGS and others, 1999). DGGS efforts are focused on determining the geologic framework of the Livengood area, and its potential for placer gold and lode mineral deposits. Field work for bedrock investigations, including ridge traverses and examination of riverbank exposures, was conducted for approximately 90 person-days during the months of May through August 2003 and 5 person-days in July 2001. Field notes and rock samples were collected at approximately 1,100 stations throughout the Livengood Quadrangle. Plots of airborne magnetic and resistivity data (DGGS and others, 1999) overlain with standard USGS raster topography were used daily in the field to help identify geologic contacts, units, and faults. At most field stations, magnetic susceptibility data were collected to help identify magnetic units. Bedrock mappers recorded observations on 1:50,000-scale topographic base maps of 15-minute quadrangles that were enlarged from a scale of 1:63,360. In the evenings, each geologist's observations were compiled onto a single mylar base map. Field stations were located using handheld Garmin 12XL GPS units. Field station notes and downloaded GPS location data were entered into a Microsoft Access 2000 database. Geologic information from relevant literature, mineral industry, and historical accounts was incorporated into the data generated from field work.

Laboratory data - During this project, 50 rock samples were collected for whole rock (major- and minor-oxides, and petrogenetically important trace-elements) analysis and 54 rock samples were collected for geochemical trace-element analysis (Athey and others, 2004b). Analytical data were used to aid interpretation and development of the geologic map and evaluation of the area's mineral potential. To further geologic understanding of the area, igneous and metamorphic rock samples were selected for whole-rock geochemical analysis. Results from major-oxide and trace-element geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks were used to classify rocks according to established petrologic nomenclature. To help evaluate the area's mineral resource potential, rocks that were either visibly mineralized, or had features that suggested the potential to be mineralized, were analyzed for geochemical trace elements. Unweathered or minimally weathered rock samples were preferentially selected for analysis. Details about the analyses are found in the source publications.
Petrography and modal analyses on more than 154 thin sections, and modal analysis of approximately 57 rock slabs stained for potassium feldspar, were also used to classify rocks according to established petrologic nomenclature.
Geochronologic information was obtained by the 40Ar/39Ar and K-Ar methods in order to determine the age of geologic units in the map area as well as the age of sericite alteration spatially associated with gold-bearing, arsenopyrite-altered intrusive rock at the Old Smoky prospect in the Livengood C-4 Quadrangle (Athey and others, 2004a). See text and "Source_Information" section for further details about the analyses. One Sm-Nd analysis is in process.
Microfossil and megafossil information was obtained by the study of hand samples, thin sections, slabs, and residue from dissolved carbonate.

Digital Cartography - The final compilation of the bedrock geologic map data on mylar was scanned as a high-resolution tiff file. The files were imported into MapInfo Professional 7.5, and geographically registered in UTM coordinates (see spatial reference information section below). Geologic polygons were digitized 'on-screen' by tracing geologic contacts; each polygon was attributed with appropriate supporting information. The geologic polygon and line layers were imported into ArcGIS 8.3 geodatabase format using ArcTools and ArcCatalog 8.3. Spatially registered point data for the map were made in MapInfo Professional 6.5 and 7.5 from Microsoft Excel and Access 2000 files and converted into ArcGIS 8.3 geodatabase format using ArcTools and ArcCatalog 8.3. Editing and quality control checks took place at every process step. Final geologic feature and attribute editing was completed in ArcGIS 8.3. Map text was created in Microsoft Word. All final map layout and editing was accomplished in CorelDRAW 10.0.
