This dataset is comprised of a vector topographic base map illustrating the Chandler Lake B-4 and C-4 1:63,360 quadrangles.
This data set was created and attributed for use as a base map for the Siksikpuk STATEMAP geologic mapping project that took place during the 2004-2005 field season. The dataset was created to provide maximum quality resolution for printing and publication purposes.
The geospatial data in this dataset were vectorized from scanned raster topographic maps published by the U.S. Geological Survey. The metadata for the vector topographic base maps (the Chandler Lake B-4 and C-4) are addressed separately. The layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shape files. Attribute information for the following layers (entities) is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Label." Layers include:
>b4_hydroline rivers and streams represented as lines (B-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>b4_hydropoly rivers, streams, lakes, and swamps represented as polygons (B-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>b4_ptelev point elevations (B-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>b4_topoline contour lines (B-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>c4_hydroline rivers and streams represented as lines (C-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>c4_hydropoly rivers, streams, lakes, and swamps represented as polygons (C-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>c4_ptelev point elevations (C-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)
>c4_topoline contour lines (C-4 Chandler Lake Quadrangle)

Funding for the geologic mapping performed for this project was provided by the U.S. Geological Survey STATEMAP Program under award number 05HQAG0025 with additional funding from the National Petroleum Refuge-Alaska Project (NPRA). Project management by Paige R. Peapples. Digital vectorization, attributing, and metadata by Andrea Loveland.
Vectorization of raster image was performed using the program Raster to Vector Map Conversion (R2V) by Able Software. Microsoft Windows XP SP2, ArcGIS 9.+, and any text editor.
Individual map separates were scanned and vectorized to Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) specifications in a program called Raster to Vector Map Conversion (R2V) by Able Software. The magnitude of error associated with vectorization of the raster images is very small or non-existent. Essentially, during auto-vectorization, lines on the scanned image are traced by the program, producing vector lines. Able Software reports that no spatial error occurs during automated vectorization.
Topology is present on appropriate line and polygon datasets.
This dataset includes geospatial data that contain information about the topography and hydrology of the Chandler Lake C-4 and B-4 1:63,360 quadrangle maps as illustrated by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Individual map separates were scanned and vectorized to Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) specifications. The magnitude of error associated with the step is unknown but it assumed to be very small or non-existent relative to possible errors in the associated geologic dataset.
18
Estimated horizontal error in meters (~60 ft). This distance is essentially the width of two pixels within the digitized USGS DRG.

15
Estimated vertical error in meters (~50 ft). This distance is essentially half the contour interval of the digitized USGS DRG.

Individual map separates were obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey Earth Science Information Center in Denver, Colorado. Two map separates were used, including: 1) contour lines and peak elevations, and 2) hydrology. Each of these black and white separates were scanned. The resulting TIFF images were then georeferenced and vectorized in a program designed by Able Software called Raster to Vector Map Conversion (R2V). A geodatabase for both the Chandler Lake B-4/C-4 topography and hydrology were created and entities were attributed using ArcGIS 9.0. The section, township and range grids used to complete this base map are geospatial data from the Department of Natural Resources internal dataset.
