In July 2011, a helicopter-based crew photographed approximately 180 miles of shoreline along the eastern edge of Norton Sound, from Cape Denbigh to south of Unalakleet, AK. During this flight 2,180 oblique aerial photographs were collected and spatially referenced using a Garmin Dakota 20, handheld GPS. The communities of Unalakleet and Shaktoolik lie along the flight-line of this project.
<purpose>The purpose of this publication is to provide a spatial reference for oblique aerial photographs taken along the Eastern Norton Sound shoreline in July 2011. The oblique aerial imagery is intended to serve as a photographic reference of coastal features and conditions at the time of collection.</purpose>
<supplinf>One shapefile, an Excel file, and the complete collection of oblique aerial photographs are provided in this publication. A point file (replicated in both Excel and shapefile formats) provides the spatial location where each photograph was taken. For ease of use, the oblique aerial photographs are grouped into 19 separate .zip file downloads. The image group divisions are composed of approximately 100 photos and are grouped by general shoreline position and characterization. Image file names and image file groups are listed in the point files. Photography of the shoreline in the vicinity of Unalakleet and Shaktoolik can be found in the image groups norton-sound-shoreline-obliques-15 and norton-sound-shoreline-obliques-07, respectively. The DGGS metadata standard extends the FGDC standard to include several elements that are required to facilitate internal data management. These elements, referred to as 'layers', group and describe files that have intrinsic logical or topological relationships. This dataset is described by one layer titled:
>norton-sound-photo-points	Points showing the locations of 2180 oblique aerial photographs from eastern Norton Sound (these points are provided in both .xlsx and shapefile formats)

<complete>Oblique aerial photographs are provided for the section of Norton Sound shoreline from approximately one mile North of Shaktoolik, AK to one mile South of Unalakleet, AK. There are two locations where the flight path and associated photographs deviate from the coast. The first location is within the community of Shaktoolik, caused by the re-fueling of the helicopter. The second location, just North of Unalakleet, was caused by reduced visibility that forced the pilot to circle until he gained special IFR clearance. The possible flight lines near Unalakleet were restricted due to reduced visibility, therefore photos are taken from lower altitudes and closer to the shoreline in this segment. The Unalakleet airport reported 2.5 to 5 mile visibility during the flight window for image collection.</complete>

<procdesc>Acquisition of Oblique Aerial Images: The Norton Sound shoreline was photographed from a low flying south bound helicopter on July 30, 2011. The crew employed a hand-held Cannon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS digital camera to collect 12 Megapixel 4000x3000 (180 dpi) imagery. The photograph collection began at 9:00 am AKST north of Shaktoolik and ended at 12:00 noon AKST south of Unalakleet. All photos were linked to GPS tracks logged with a Garmin Dakota 20 handheld GPS.</procdesc>
