This sampling project was part of a statewide assessment of Alaska's potential for rare-earth element mineralization. During the William Henry Bay field project 46 rock, sediment, and heavy-mineral concentrate samples were collected for geochemical analysis (geochemical, major oxide, minor oxide, trace element, and rare earth elements). Purpose: Fieldwork was performed to evaluate the mineral-resource potential of a block of State land near the mouth of William Henry Creek, and to investigate reported rare-earth-element, uranium, and thorium mineral occurrences on adjacent Tongass National Forest land. This fieldwork and sampling was conducted as part of the State's Rare Earth Element and Strategic Minerals Assessment project, which is designed to evaluate Alaska's potential for these resources. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Sample collection - Rock, stream sediment, and heavy-mineral pan-concentrate samples were collected from outcrops, float fields, and stream beds in the William Henry Bay area. Rock samples were chosen and collected on the basis of potential for mineralization (as identified by visual inspection). Igneous rocks as well as rocks that exhibited veining or alteration were preferentially chosen for geochemical examination. Heavy mineral concentrates were isolated by hand-panning in the field. Rocks intended for whole-rock analysis by Actlabs and those with a weathering rind were trimmed at DGGS with a tile saw prior to sample preparation at the laboratory. Rock samples were crushed to minus-10 mesh (1.7mm), mechanically split by riffling, and then pulverized to 95% minus-150 mesh (105 microns). A mild steel mill was used for pulverizing to minimize contamination of samples. Stream sediment and pan concentrate samples were dried at a temperature of 60C and then sieved to minus 80 mesh (177 microns). For Code-8 REE analysis, both rock and sediment samples were further pulverized to minus-200 mesh (0.074mm) using a mild-steel mill. Cleaning sand was used after every sample preparation to prevent contamination.
