This dataset is comprised of a vector topographic and hydrologic base map illustrating the Kavik River map area, including the Mount Michelson C-5 and B-5 Quadrangles and portions of the Mount Michelson C-4 and B-4 Quadrangles. The geospatial data in this dataset were vectorized from scanned raster topographic maps published by the U.S. Geological Survey.
This dataset was created to serve as a base map for the Kavik River STATEMAP project which includes surficial and bedrock geology.
The metadata for the vector topographic base maps (Mount Michelson C-5 and B-5 as well as the C-4 and B-4 on the west side of the Canning River) are addressed as a collective work. The layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shapefiles.Attribute information for the following layers is included in this metadata file under the "Entity _and_Attribute_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Label."Layers include:
>contours topographic contours
>hydro_lines hydrology lines
>hydro_polygons hydrology polygons
>sec_grid_clip section grid clipped to the shape of the map area
>kavik_outline outline of the Kavik River map area
>pt_elevations elevation points

This report, map, and/or data set are available directly from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys
Any hardcopies or published data sets utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way, the user is obligated to describe the types of modifications the user has made.User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that changes made by the user were approved by the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys.
Attribute accuracy was visually verified via visual spot check comparison of the resultant digital files against the paper originals.
Topology is present on appropriate line and polygon data sets.
This dataset includes geospatial data that contain information about the topography and hydrology of the Mount Michelson C-5 and B-5 and portions of the C-4 and C-5 1:63,360 quadrangle maps as illustrated by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The magnitude of horizontal error associated with digitization of the raster linework is unknown but is thought to be ~60 ft. This distance is essentially the ground width of two pixels within the digitized image.

A software program titled All Topo was used to stitch together multiple scanned US Geological Survey, 1:63,360 scale, topographic maps into a single raster image of the mapping area. The resulting TIFF image was then georeferenced and vectorized by Design Presentation Associates and the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. A geodatabase for both the topography and hydrology was created and entities were attributed using ArcGIS 9.0.
