Liquefaction
In saturated, cohesionless soil, the transformation from a solid to a liquid state as a result of increased pore pressure and reduced effective stress [in response to severe ground shaking resulting from an earthquake]. (Neuendorf, K.K.E., Mehl, J.P., Jr., and Jackson, J.A., ed., 2005, Glossary of Geology: American Geological Institute, 799 p.)
